We have all been taught that the foundation of a healthy life is built on fresh fruits and vegetables. The food pyramid (and the modern “MyPlate”) encourages us to load up on colorful produce to prevent disease and boost longevity. However, not all produce is created equal.

While eating fruits and vegetables is vital, a significant portion of the non-organic produce on our shelves is coated in a “cocktail” of synthetic chemicals. The “Dirty Dozen”: Foods With the Highest Pesticide Load

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) releases an annual list known as the Dirty Dozen. These are the fruits and vegetables that test positive for the highest residues of pesticides.  

If you are on a budget, these are the foods you should prioritize buying Organic. If you buy the conventional (non-organic) versions of these, you are likely consuming a high volume of insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides.

1. Strawberries

Consistently ranked #1 as the most contaminated food. A single strawberry can contain residues of over 20 different pesticides.  

• Common Chemicals: Carbendazim (a hormone-disrupting fungicide banned in the EU), bifenthrin.

2. Spinach

Leafy greens have a massive surface area that clings to chemicals.

• Common Chemicals: Permethrin (neurotoxic insecticide), DDT byproducts (in some soil). Spinach samples often have nearly twice the pesticide residue by weight compared to any other crop.  

3. Kale, Collard, and Mustard Greens

These are often touted as “superfoods,” but conventional versions are highly contaminated.  

• Common Chemicals: DCPA (Dacthal) – a weed killer classified as a possible human carcinogen, recently banned in the EU but still used in the US.  

4. Grapes

Both table grapes and raisins have high residue counts.

• Common Chemicals: Imidacloprid (a neonicotinoid bee-killer) and various fungicides used to prevent mold during shipping.

5. Peaches

Their fuzzy skin traps chemicals and makes them difficult to wash off.

• Common Chemicals: Fludioxonil, iprodione. Over 99% of non-organic peaches tested contained detectable pesticide residues.  

6. Pears

Pears have seen a dramatic increase in pesticide load in recent years.

• Common Chemicals: Pyrimethanil and o-Phenylphenol.

7. Nectarines

Similar to peaches, these are highly treated to prevent blemishes.

• Common Chemicals: Formetanate hydrochloride.

8. Apples

For years, apples were at the top of the list. Most of the pesticides are found in the peel, but peeling the fruit removes most of the nutrients.

• Common Chemicals: Diphenylamine (DPA) – used to prevent “storage scald” (browning) while apples sit in warehouses for months.  

9. Bell and Hot Peppers

These crops are sprayed heavily with insecticides because they are prone to pests.

• Common Chemicals: Acephate and chlorpyrifos (organophosphates that can harm the developing brain).  

10. Cherries

• Common Chemicals: Bifenthrin.

11. Blueberries

• Common Chemicals: Phosmet and malathion (organophosphates).  

12. Green Beans

• Common Chemicals: Acephate – a toxic pesticide prohibited on green beans grown for food in many other countries.

Yes, but the story is nuanced. Glyphosate is used as a weed killer between the rows of fruit trees and berry bushes. While it is not usually sprayed directly on the fruit like it is with grains, “drift” occurs, and residues are frequently found on berries and orchard fruits.

Where is Glyphosate the Highest?

The highest levels of Glyphosate are actually found in Grains and Legumes, not fruit. Farmers often spray Glyphosate on these crops just days before harvest to dry them out (desiccation).  

• Highest Glyphosate Risk: Oats (oatmeal, oat milk), Wheat (bread, pasta), Chickpeas (hummus), and Lentils.

If you are worried about Glyphosate, switching to Organic Oats and Grains is just as important as buying Organic Strawberries.

The “Clean Fifteen”: Safer Conventional Choices

If you cannot buy everything organic, these conventionally grown foods typically have the lowest pesticide loads because they have thick skins or natural defenses:
